Zhou Xuan

Zhou Xuan born 1996 in Hebei, graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts CAFA, Beijing in 2019 obtained a Master's degree from the same school in 2022.

Zhou Xuan's work consists of a brass base and pearls. Inspired by the curves of a woman’s body, the pieces look stunning. The use of brass, on the other hand, gives the work a hard aspect, which is a feminine force. Feminine characters traits both gentle and powerful coexist in her work. This is a romance that belongs to women.

"...These series of works discuss about the "body". My inspiration was the phenomenon of "bead mussels producing pearls", most pearls are produced due to foreign bodies (gravel, artificial bead nuclei) entering the body of the pearl. "Foreign bodies that enter the body" also reminded me of what I experienced and rejected, such as pimples, stye, urticaria, and some things that were indoctrinated, as well as things I had not experienced, such as serious diseases, tumors, fertility, death, etc. From a visual point of view, the luster of the pearl is the result of the flesh of the pearl mussel resisting the foreign body – a painful thing, but ultimately presented in an unusually beautiful way. Looking at the mother shell, I found that the bulge and swelling of the pearl under the flesh of the skin caused sensory discomfort and fascinated me at the same time, so in the choice of materials in the work, I used many materials that were considered beautiful or even flashy to express this sense of conflict..."  Zhou Xuan
