Lee Shang Hwa

7th March - 14th April, 2019

191 South Suzhou Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, China, 200002

Art+ Shanghai Gallery is thrilled to announce the opening of an upcoming exhibition by a Korean artist Lee Shang Hwa Through the Maze: Navigating One Artist’s Path that will be on view from March 7th to April 14th, 2019.

For many artists, the question of one’s distinctive style and identity as painters or sculptors dominates their creative career. Eager to push boundaries of what an artist can do, a young Korean painter Lee Shang Hwa scorns the notion of an artist's signature style and attempts to achieve a sense of complete freedom of expression that is devoid of fears of criticism and judgment, and untouched by desires for acceptance and recognition. His diversified oeuvre thus includes works that incorporate household items next to their hyper-realistic depictions in oil and acrylic, objects and landscapes with surrealistically alienated scenarios, meticulous color dots arrangements on jigsaw puzzle-shaped canvases, and miniature watercolor drawings with misleading textual denominations.

Lee's first solo exhibition Through the Maze: Navigating One Artist's Path held at Art+ Shanghai Gallery sets out to showcase a full spectrum of the artist's creative expressions at an early stage of his career. Unlike retrospectives that are typically contemplative of a single artist's work created in the past, this exhibition aspires to envision the future of one by revealing what at first sight may seem a bewildering and disorienting variety of creative narratives that artist juggles at present.

Where we come from and where we go, who is to decide how to live our lives and what we can or cannot do - these are Lee's philosophical reflections on life that he transmits through his paintings and the titles of his works. His artistic practice thus becomes a path to an awareness of self and man's position in the world, while his artistic skills are up for profundity of the task that he sets for himself.
