"Confluence of Time: A Dual Exhibition by Lin Weixiang and Xu Weibo"
Art + Shanghai Gallery presents a dual exhibition, '"Confluence of Time, featuring works by artists Lin Weixiang and Xu Weibo. The exhibition showcases the artists' latest creations.
"Confluence of Time” is inspired by the narrative style in Virginia Woolf's celebrated novel 'To the Lighthouse'. It emphasizes the consciousness of time, inviting viewers to perceive various layers of the same subject and experience. The exhibition presents different levels of consciousness regarding objects from diverse temporal perspectives, creating a cohesive artistic viewpoint.
Temporal ruptures are essential in positioning the artistic milestones of both Lin Weixiang and Xu Weibo. Like prominent rocks emerging from a river, each series of work begins to enhance the continuity of creation. Individual pieces serve as connecting threads between series, binding them with the artists' personal experiences, which resonate with the audience.
Born in Guangdong in 1982, Lin Weixiang is a graduate of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Known for his unique painting techniques, materials, and visual style, Lin Weixiang uses floral fabrics to imbue his characters and scenes with a sense of wonder, creating a fantastical space on the canvas. His works like 'White Marks', 'Entanglement', and 'Bamboo' showcase his masterful layering of different scenes and his exploration of space. His ongoing 'Fabric Collage' series presents various manifestations of books, with each piece encapsulating treasures preserved by the artist at different stages of his journey.
Xu Weibo, born in Shantou, Guangdong, in 1987, is a graduate of the Chinese Painting Department of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition presents three of his long-standing series: "Standard Image of Fire," "Let There Be Light," and "Ordinary Objects." His upbringing experiences in Chaoshan region serve as the central thread linking his creative endeavors, subtly reflected in his artworks. His use of foil materials gives rise to fresh narratives and visual compositions in his works, enriching the artworks' expressive capabilities.
In "Standard Image of Fire", fire expresses personal memories and perceptions. In the "Let There Be Light" series, the inclusion of various toy forms symbolizes the transition from son to father. The "Ordinary Objects" series contemplates collective and personal memories through diverse imagery and symbols, mirroring Ronald Fairbairn's concept of the "object-seeking drive."
Each artwork by these two artists resembles a weighty reef anchored amidst the tumultuous river. Themes of space, time, self, society, and the cosmos are intricately woven together, reflecting the profound contemplations of Lin Weixiang and Xu Weibo.
